Background of the Study

Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of public health, significantly influencing patient outcomes and disease prevention. Healthcare workers play a crucial role in delivering nutrition education and counseling, yet studies indicate that many lack adequate training in this area (WHO, 2024). Nutrition education programs aim to enhance healthcare workers' knowledge, equipping them to provide evidence-based dietary guidance to patients.

In Gombe State, malnutrition and diet-related diseases remain prevalent, exacerbated by a lack of proper dietary counseling in healthcare settings (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Despite existing nutrition education programs, their effectiveness in improving healthcare workers’ knowledge and influencing patient care is unclear. This study evaluates the impact of nutrition education programs on healthcare workers in Gombe State.

Statement of the Problem

The rising burden of malnutrition and diet-related diseases in Gombe State highlights the need for well-informed healthcare workers who can provide adequate dietary counseling (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). However, many healthcare professionals receive minimal nutrition training, leading to gaps in patient education and dietary management.

This study assesses the effectiveness of nutrition education programs in equipping healthcare workers with the necessary knowledge to improve dietary counseling and patient outcomes in Gombe State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of nutrition knowledge among healthcare workers in Gombe State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing nutrition education programs.
  3. To identify challenges in implementing nutrition education programs for healthcare workers.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of nutrition knowledge among healthcare workers in Gombe State?
  2. How effective are nutrition education programs in improving dietary counseling?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of nutrition education programs?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nutrition education programs have no significant impact on healthcare workers’ nutrition knowledge.
  2. There is no significant relationship between nutrition education and improved patient dietary counseling.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the success of nutrition education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on healthcare workers in Gombe State, evaluating their nutrition knowledge and the effectiveness of training programs. Limitations include differences in training quality, access to resources, and variations in healthcare settings.
